We should go to the Pentagon!

Hey Element Church! Those are famous last words. Almost DEADLY last words. I'll get to that in a second.

We spent the ENTIRE day in Washington D. C. today. I think Adam and I could start a Speed Tour business here and make a KILLING. We got into D.C. about 10:30 and went to the Washington Monument, WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Wall, lunch with one of Adam's friends, White House, National Air and Space Museum, Union Station, Ebeneezer's Coffee shop and the Pentagon. Below is a slide show of pics I took on my phone today. Here are a few thoughts on the day.

I am BLOWN AWAY at the sacrifice men and women have made to defend our country and provide us with what we know today as FREEDOM. It STINKIN' TICKS ME OFF (LOL) that some people today are trying to change what men and women died for to satisfy their lusts and desires. What our country was established to be is so far from what it is. In my LOUD yet humble opinion. The WWII Memorial and Vietnam Memorial was VERY cool.

It was weird being in D.C. To know that people who started our country were there. Amazing. Didn't seem real all day.

D.C. is the stupidest city I've ever walked or driven in. ABSOLUTELY and THOROUGHLY confusing! I can't tell you how many times we were lost. It is THE CRAZIEST place to get around in. Adam and I wasted at LEAST 1 - 2 hours trying to figure out where we were at and how we get to the next place.

We had visited everything we wanted to and Adam was like "We should go to the Pentagon!" We bought a one day pass on the Metro and it went right to the Pentagon so as our last site to see we headed there. We got off the Metro and went up the escalator. Little did we know that we actually came out of the ground and we were standing NEXT TO the Pentagon. Security everywhere. A guy about 10 feet away was a big ole' security guard standing with an AK47. We started walking to where we could take a picture. Adam pulled out the camera, we thought we could see where one of the jets hit the building. The following conversation happened:

Adam: I'm gonna get a picture of that right there. (pulls out camera)
Mr. AK47: (steps out from behind a bullet proof security thingy. Yes that's the official name 'security thingy'. With AK47 CLEARLY showing) HEY YOU CAN'T TAKE ANY PICTURES!
Jeff and Adam: (Now need a new pair of shorts)
Mr. AK47: DID YOU GET ANY PICTURES BACK THERE?
Adam: Umm, no.
Mr. AK47: PUT THE LENS CAP BACK ON THAT CAMERA NOW! YOU CAN'T TAKE ANY PICTURES.
Jeff: (What I wanted to say was "Yeah, we heard you the first time when I messed my shorts!") But what I really said was "We didn't know you couldn't take pictures."
Mr. AK47: (With gun still CLEARLY showing in front of him) "Yeah, that's why I warned you."

HOLY COW! That dude wasn't messing around. Needless to say, we did NOT get any pictures of the Pentagon. Overall it was a very fun day. Cool to see all the history and sites. The navigating was insane. Don't wish that on anyone. Adam should have some stuff up soon too. I think he's blogging in the other bed. LOL Can't wait for Sunday. I miss my family and I miss Cheyenne! "I don't want to have a romantic dinner with you Jeff!"

LOL That is one quote already from the weekend. Adam said that to me as we were restaurant shopping. We were in Reston Town Center looking for a place to eat and EVERY place looked like it would be a place you'd take your girlfriend to ask you to marry you. Candlelight. Quiet. Intimate. Three words we DID NOT want to define our dinner together. Thankfully we found a Chicago style restaurant called Uno Chicago Grill. It was phenomenal. Right in the heart of Reston Town Center. Nachos were amazing. And no romance at ALL! LOL

"I wish our eyes had zoom!" Another quote from Adam as we were driving to the airport from Denver. He wanted to see a hot air balloon off in the distance.

"That's 'so and so'(fill in the blank)" We are seriously too starstruck. It's sad! We've learned over the past year SO MUCH from some of the guys we're seeing here.

"This is CRAZY!" That's been my continuing line. So weird to me that we are on the East Coast of the USA. I'm sheltered. HA!

Ski Trip

I took Jonah skiing yesterday up at Snowy Range Ski Area. We had a blast! Jonah did so well. I put a little video together of him skiing. He was cruising down the intermediate blue runs by the end of the day and begging to go down a black. Next time I think he'll be ready to tackle a black diamond run. Enjoy the video.

Too old? NEVER!

We have some AMAZING people who come to Element Church and there is a group of them that I want to honor today. Many people might think that the only folks coming to Element are "young" adults or "young" families. First of all "young" has nothing to do with age and everything to do with your heart. We do have our share of young people but we have an AWESOME group of...well, age challenged folks. Like Grant for instance! LOL Just kidding bro! One of our regular attenders (I believe she helped ush recently too) turned 80 two weeks ago. I don't know peoples ages but we have several coming AND serving who are probably in their 60's (or close, lol, I'm gonna be in trouble for this). There is one wonderful lady who just recently started coming (at the beginning of "Believe"), I won't guess her age, but she's someone you may not expect at Element and she welcomed me with a smile and a hug on Sunday and left with a glint of a tear, AND another hug. I LOVE having these people by my side. God's purpose for us doesn't go away when we get older. No matter how old you are, YOU ARE USEFUL AT ELEMENT CHURCH! I pray that those of you who attend Element (or anywhere) and are getting up in your years, I pray that you will dream dreams! I pray you will pursue your passions! I pray that you will NEVER believe the lie that you are too old to be used! I had the wonderful privilege of riding out to the local dump today with just one of those folks from Element. We had an AWESOME discussion in the pickup. I don't know how old they are but I know this. If I have HALF of their passion for Jesus when I'm their age, I'll be doing VERY well. God brought them to Element and they are truly an invaluable part of our team. May I never take for granted these people that God has brought us. For all you age challenged followers of Jesus out there. THANK YOU! You are an inspiration and may God use you in MIGHTY ways for Him!

Holy Spirit

Thought this was great.

Yesterday, Jonah asked Sabrina who the Holy Spirit was. That question is hard enough to explain to an adult who doesn't have much "spiritual" knowledge, let alone a 6 year old. I love that the inquisitiveness of kids.

Sabrina attempted to give her best explanation in 6 year old terms and thought she had a good way to convey this great doctrinal truth. She said "Well, the Holy Spirit is God's voice when he talks to us. When you're about to do something naughty don't you hear a little voice inside tell you not to?"

Jonah, as serious as could be said "NO, I just hear yours!"

Time Change

Purpose of this blog

I've learned recently from some Elementers of some new readers to the blog. I'm glad people from our church and others are reading up. This is a great tool for Element Church folk, family, friends, and onlookers to be kept up to date with the happenings of Element Church, and some personal family moments as well. I am excited that people are following along and enjoying the blog. With that said, I wanted to share the purpose of my blog. I have open comments so people can make comments if they like. However, I typically don't respond to comments (good or bad). This blog will not be a forum to debate or discuss with anyone doctrines, beliefs, or strategies. It's a place to share from my heart. If anyone would like to discuss those issues, I'd be glad to take you to Starbucks, meet in my office or swing on the swingset at the park while we talk. Seriously though, if someone wants to talk about anything on this blog I'll be glad to in person. Anyway, with the increased blog readership I thought I should post that. Excited!

I'm working on my sermon right now and am totally pumped about the message this week. We're talking about our core value of Significance. I believe in this core value for God's people so much it hurts. I'm preaching on a passage I've never preached before and it is challenging me to the core. Adam and I met today to discuss the creative elements of the next couple of weeks and am excited about that as well.

If you're an Elementer, don't miss this Sunday. I truly believe that what we are going to talk about is something our enemy the devil does not want us to figure out cause it will destroy his cause. I believe so strongly that God through the local church and HIS people is the hope of the world. If we as God's people don't RISE UP. If we as the church don't CHANGE the way we do things, we may as well pack our bags and go home. MAN, I can't wait for Sunday. I need someone to preach to right now.

Well, now I probably over sold our service and you'll come and be dissapointed. Had to get that off my chest. I can't wait for Sunday.

Good progress today

We were able to work through our sermon series all the way up until next Fall. It was great to get some stuff hashed out and start talking about coming sermon series. Some of the issues over the next year we'll be tackling are going to be VERY tough to tackle but we feel that they need to be addressed. It's nice to start talking about creative elements months in advance.

We love the theater and the feel and vibe we get in there. I love not having to worry about a building payment and upkeep. It is actually going to be hard for me to leave the theater when we have to. At the rate we are growing right now that "have to" moment may come too soon. We actually went and looked at a building today. We are always searching out options and seeing what is out there so we know what our possibilities are.

Looking forward to tomorrow and getting some stuff for this Sunday finalized.

Great Start

This week has started off so much better than last week. The feeling for all of us in the office has been awesome. I feel further ahead. More prepared and just at ease. Last week I felt like nothing was right. I really feel as if we were under some opposition in the spiritual realm and I think we were dealing with coming off that high of launch week which we worked so hard for. Sunday morning as I woke up, I really felt freed. Anyway, this week is going great. I'm STOKED for Sunday. We're pulling out all the stops. A great set design. Adam and the band are pulling off our biggest worship and music set yet. And the word God has laid on my heart, I am more excited about than in a long time. The Scripture He is unfolding to me is amazing on our core value of change. We're seeing wonderful response from people and I hope that the newspaper article from yesterday brings some new people in.

We had a great creative planning session today. Looking ahead to the next several weeks. We're gonna try a new approach next week during the worship core value. I'm excited about what we are planning.

Tomorrow morning, Grant, Adam and I are driving to Denver in a down and back morning. Doing a surprise something for Sunday morning.

Launch Letdown

Man, I have felt behind the entire week. Can I be honest here? Ever have one of those weeks where you just felt you couldn't get the ball rolling? It's not that you weren't working hard but it just doesn't seem like your work was producing anything. I take pride in the fact that we work HARD at our office. I've had times in ministry where I just wanted to get by. That is not the case here. We want to do things with excellence and pour all of our energy in the Sunday morning worship experience. We try to take Fridays off and work Sunday - Thursday. This week just seemed like we'd come off the mountain top experience. We were prepared and excited for Sunday and God did not disappoint. By Wednesday of this week I felt like we had accomplished nothing. We were working, and tasks were being accomplished but it felt weird. Anyway, it's days like this we need to remember that God doesn't want us to stay on the mountain top, but to use the mountain top experience to get through the valley. Another Sunday is coming and I trust it will be a mountain top as well. We poured ALL our energy and then some for months into last Sundays launch service. It's only natural to "feel" the letdown. Much of Monday and Tuesday I was still trying to wrap my brain around what happened Sunday. When Jesus took his inner circle (Peter, James and John) up the mountain where the transfiguration took place (Matthew 17:1-13) he was changed/morphed before them. Peter blurted out "THIS IS AWESOME! Let's build shelters and stay here" (my words). But Jesus said "Get up. Lets go back down the mountain". Then when Jesus ascended (Acts 1) into Heaven after his resurrection it says the disciples where standing there staring to Heaven. Two white-robed men suddenly appeared and said "Why are you staring into heaven?" In other words "Get down the mountain and start working". It may not feel the same, or be the same but it's just as important. May God help us to come down the mountain and work toward that next mountain top experience. Because we've been on the mountain with God, we can work through the valley.

19 Months: 7 Days Ago

Right about 19 months and 7 days ago this adventure started. I can't wrap my brain around the fact that we are actually starting this church, THIS SUNDAY! It seriously seems like it was just 7 months ago that this started, but it's been 19. The excitement in the office yesterday was electric. For the first time in this whole process I got butterflies in my stomach yesterday. It was the same feeling I would get when playing sports in school, just that nervous anticipation. Here are some memories and thoughts of the last 19 months and 7 days.

--- I'll talk of this over and over till the day I die. February 28th, 2006 God confirmed to me through Scripture that we were to go and start a new church in Cheyenne. I asked Grant that day "Do you ever think about church planting?" His response "I think about it every day bro!" That 1 minute conversation started a course of adventure for us that will/has forever changed our lives.

--- The Sunday I told Dan of this calling in my heart is a day in the process I'll never forget. I went over to his house on a Sunday afternoon. He had to know something was up. I was scared to death, don't know why. Felt the same way when I told my dad I was called to the ministry. Both Dan and my Dad are two the of the godliest men I know so being afraid doesn't make sense. God had already been speaking to Dan's heart about me leaving. That was amazing. He wasn't surprised! The Lord had already prepared his heart for what I was going to tell him. Dan has been nothing but 100% supportive since then.

--- Church planters boot camp. We attended boot camp in June of 06' in Pennsylvania. I remember going through three emotions when we were there. "What in the world have we got ourselves into?" "Man, I think we can do this." "When can we start, we can definitely do this!"
This is a church planter MUST. I don't know where we would be were it not for boot camp.

--- Result from boot camp. They had challenged everyone to be in your mission field for a year before launch. We were planning on coming here in June of 07' and launching in September. Because of their advice, and the divine working of God in the hearts of HPCC and provision of a youth pastor for them, we were able to move here in February of 07' which gave us a 4 month head start. We wouldn't be ready to launch this week if we would have arrived in June.

--- September of 06 Keenan and Katrina moved to Cheyenne. Again, one of those things that got us to where we are at today. They paved the way and made some key relationships for us in the community. HUGE step of faith for them to do that. They were here all lone for 5 months.

--- October of 2006. Our first team meeting with Adam and Amber. Adam and Amber didn't commit at that time but the Lord spoke to Grants heart and said "This is the first meeting of your team." I didn't look for anyone else. Adam was the first person that God laid on my heart to be our worship leader. I talked to him from October 06 to February of 07 before that punk agreed to come down here. LOL It was a huge step for them as well to leave Adams home church and the only place he had done ministry. God clearly paved the way for them as well with confirmations through friends, family and Scripture that this was God's move for them.

--- Adam joining the team just completed it all. I don't know of anyone else on this entire team I would do things differently with. God brought us together for this calling. That amazes me.

--- March 2007: 6 of us meet in a basement to start Element Church.
May 2007: Gas buydown serving over 200 vehicles
June 2007: Life Groups multiply from 1 - 3
June 2007: Unplugged worship service begins with 34 people
June 23, 2007: We serve thousands of people at Superday with inflatable games
July 1, 2007: First Preview 75 people
August 5: Second Preview
Sept. 29th: Gas Buydown, over 5,000 gallons and 480 people served.
Sept. 30th: Final Preview 78 people in attendance
Oct. 7th, 2007: ????? What will happen. This is not the end. This is not the day I see in my heart. In fact. I don't see an end. The opportunities for God to work in Cheyenne are LIMITLESS. What will we do? Where will we go? Who will we reach? WOW! It is here. I can't believe it.

Launch Week Updates

This week is really FLYING by. I cannot believe we are 4 days from launch. We are going to be doing some cool stage/set stuff this week. We're trying to finalize that. Here are some stuff that has been going on this week.

--- Our direct mail piece hit mailboxes today. Our family received one. Every home of 18-45 year olds in Cheyenne received an invite to Element Church this week. 8,049 to be exact. Thank you to Terri for finding Kinkos to get this done for us. It cost us more money but i think it's worth it to get it out.

--- Our "new mover" cards went out this past week. Through outreach.com we have purchased a new mover program. Each month Outreach sends out oversized postcard invites to all new movers in Cheyenne. It is VERY affordable and we are the only church in town doing it. IF another church decides to do it they cannot use the same design of card. I'll post a picture of the card on here tomorrow. Outreach sent out over 100 cards this month to new movers into Cheyenne.

--- We pumped 5,500 gallons of gas in four hours. 480 vehicles were filled up with gas. Got that report today. Kathy, from Big D Gas Stations, said they are receiving lots of comments and "thank yous" from people who attended. I'm convinced one of the families from this past Sunday was from the buydown. I STILL need to get the news highlights online for that. We have video footage too.

--- Sermon is complete. Worship is finalized. Tweaks are made. Purchases are purchased. I feel good about this Sunday. We have a large contingent from HPCC coming down sounds like. The Search video and finale is going to be awesome.

--- On Sunday we had the church write down names of people they want to see cross the line of faith. We then asked them to place the names in a bucket, sitting in a wheelchair, representing those who are spiritually paralyzed and need help getting to Jesus. One of the names that was put in the bucket on Sunday, told the person who wrote the name, that she got in her car on Sunday and just felt that she "needed to talk to God". How cool is that? It was HUGE confirmation for this person who wrote their name, that God answers prayer and is in the business of moving people toward Him.

--- We have 2 children dedications lining up and 2 folks who want to get baptized already. I'm excited about experiencing that for the first time.

Thursday Thunder!

WOW are we doing WAY more than we should. HA! It has and is going to be a wild two weeks for us at Element Church. I'm telling you, this Sunday's service is going to be amazing and then we move into launch. I cannot wait for all the creative elements to be pulled off. We have a rockin' set of worship (even an original song by Adam), the Search video is incredible and the message is going to tie it all together as we end previews and head into launch. We're adding some stuff to the set this week. We aren't taking tomorrow off due to our over achieving minds. It's kinda like when you go to a buffet and fill your plate with WAY more than you could ever eat.

We got the mailer out, although we are eating some cost by doing it through Kinkos here in town. No complaints though. It's going out and getting done. Will hit mailboxes by Wednesday of launch week. See the post below to view the cards.

OH DUDES! We got permission today to leave our stage pieces in the theater by Nicole, the new manager. That is going to be HUGE for us. Nicole has been incredible in the two weeks she's run the theater. Amazing.

We were in the paper today for the gas buydown. On page 3 each day they have a thing called "News Briefs". They put local news, state, national, and world briefs from AP and local places. We were the first brief and it listed all our info and web-site. Brandon, who is doing the feature on us for the paper, got the brief in for us.

At 11 AM tomorrow I am meeting with the mayor and another church planter in town. The mayor is going to pray with us and release us out over the city. He is a strong believer and supports what we do. How cool is that?

At 3 PM tomorrow I'll be interviewed by the news station which then will be played on the 10 PM news. We've been blessed to get such great news coverage for our events.

We are expecting an article to hit the news stands next week about our launch.

A local pastor stopped by the office to visit today. He is an awesome dude. He's the second pastor I met with when we moved here. He prayed for us before he left which was way cool. In our discussion he asked what our emergency back up is if we would happen to lose the theater. I told him we're still seeking emergency options. He then said something to the effect of "I can't guarantee anything but I can get the ball rolling on making our gymnasium available in an emergency situation." How cool is that? He is very kingdom minded. Cool dude!

What an incredible thing we get to do. Church! There literally is nothing like it. I hope that the 1 hr and 15 min. people get to spend with Element Church is the best time of their week. I hope they have fun, laugh, cry and CONNECT WITH CHRIST! I cannot imagine doing anything else. No amount of money. No fame. No power can ever compare to what God has called us to.

That's about it. Can't wait for Saturday and the buydown. Sunday and church. Next week is launch week. Unbelievable.

Few things...

3:00 PM on Friday I am being interviewed by the news station for the buydown to show on the ten o'clock news. They don't have any camera crews that night or they would do it live again. The news will also be out Saturday to cover the buydown.

We had purchased and planned an 8,000 piece mailer to go out to everyone 18 - 45 years of age in Cheyenne inviting them to our launch. Well, the mailing house dropped the ball big time and didn't get it done. This throws a HUGE wrench in our plans. We HAVE to get this thing out. It is a MAJOR part of our promotion for launch and the only promo (besides buydown) that we are doing with our church name on it. We are finding out tomorrow if we can fix the problem through another company. Please pray that God gives us direction on what to do. You can view the postcards below.

Can't wait for this Sunday. The Search video is absolutely off the HOOK (really cool for you older folks) this week. It is unbelievably moving, powerful, and heavy stuff. If you're an Element goer, you won't want to miss this Sunday. I'll have to share about the service when it's done. If you can watch the service online next week, you'll want to.

Around Cheyenne Magazine

Found out today that we had one family come to church yesterday from reading about us in the article in Around Cheyenne Magazine. They read the article, went to our web-site and came to church. That is very cool. The mag hit the mailboxes on Saturday so maybe we'll see some more interest this coming week. Thought that was cool news.

Sunday Reflection

--- Awesome service today. The band was seriously KICKIN'! Adam is doing a phenomenal job and the band gets cleaner, better, stronger every week. Having quality worship totally sets the stage up for the message. I can't tell you how nice it is to trust my worship guy and know that he will pour out his heart and soul into our worship time. Good job Adam!

--- We had 3 or 4 new families today. Not sure. Not all of them filled out connection cards. We had a lot of new faces though. Had one return guest this week. That is the first time in a while that a guest had come back. LOTS of people had said they really liked our church but unless they came back to our Unplugged service we hadn't got them back....until now.

--- I feel like we are ready for a new wave. Talked with my church planting coach on Thursday about how people come in waves. We were in a down wave recently, and I told Grant today that I feel like we are just inches away from really taking off.

--- There are still some things I feel we can get better on. We'll talk about those at staff meeting this week.

--- Adam and I got some major planning to do this week for launch. We need to get that squared away.

--- Speaking of launch. TWO WEEKS AWAY! HOLY COW! I can't believe we are two weeks away.

--- 19 months ago this week, I decided to come to Cheyenne. 19 months ago this week I stood in the Sanctuary at High Plains and asked Grant "Have you ever thought about planting a church?" He replied "I think about it every day bro!" That will be a story I will tell to my grave. That day changed our lives forever.

--- I'm pumped about this Sunday. Taking another critical scene to investigate. We'll close out our CSI series and get ready for Launch week. MAN, can't believe it's here.

The worlds greatest podium

It's not often you get excited over a podium. A "lectern" if you will for those traditional folks. I really wanted a modern/industrial looking podium for my notes. Nick, one of the guys in our church, has a side business of doing iron artwork and such. Anyway, I called him up and asked if he could build us a podium and put our Element cross on the front of it. Anyway, this is what he came up with. Pretty stinkin' sweet if you ask me. He's putting a clear powder coat on it this week. Nick is a biker dude and he and his wife are a GREAT addition to our church. Check out Nick and also our podium.

CSI video

As I've said we've worked TIRELESSLY (especially Adam) on a short film for our CSI series leading into launch. We unvelied 2 episodes today at church. I mistakenly said you could view them on our web-site. You can't now but Adam is getting them up tomorrow. Go to www.elementweb.net and then click "watch and listen" to find them.

Sunday night, tired and RIP ROARIN' READY TO GO!

HA! Good title huh? I'm VERY tired right now so this could get REAL random. I'm already to go this week. Can't wait to get started.

Sunday mornings I get up at 4:30 AM so I can get my devotions in, prep my sermon one more time and then get to the office to pick up our trailer. I didn't use to do devotions on Sunday. Don't know why. Guess I felt church was my devotions. MAN, has it helped me to get up early and do them. Just starts off Sunday with a Word TO me before I go deliver the Word.

I picked up Adam at 6:15 and he said "I love Sundays!" I do too. They are extremely hard but MAN do I love what we do. I know it's early but being portable hasn't bothered me yet. It's definitely hard work but I love our theater. I love the feel in there. I can't wait to continue and add stuff to our set up.

We had one new family today in church. Other than that we were way down. My family was all home sick, another family with 5 kids was all home sick. I am getting impatient with seeing people come. Shouldn't be. We have over 60 giving and serving in Element Church which is AWESOME!

Our volunteers are off the hook! (Really good if you don't know what that means) We have our group that shows up at 7 AM each Sunday to do our set up. We have awesome greeters, e:kidz volunteers, band. The band was great today. Adam played the piano for the first time ever in front of people. They played "Can Anybody Hear Her" by Casting Crowns in the middle of my sermon as an illustration.

Nick (dude in our church) made me an absolutely KICKIN' podium. He has his own iron/art business. He's a biker not sure he'd want me to call it art. It is sweet! Gotta be the coolest podium ever. Has our element cross on it. I'll post a picture tomorrow.

WE UNVEILED OUR VIDEOS TODAY! We finally were able to show our video we produced. (first two episodes) You can watch them online if you go to www.elementweb.net Adam, Keenan, and Curtis did incredible jobs with this thing.

Keenan stepped up and ran sound and lights today. Ben ran the computer. I felt our transitions were light years ahead of where we've been. Videos, lights, sound just flowed really well.
